The State of Arkansas in the southern United States of America is bordered by six states, with the Mississippi River to the east. In size, Arkansas is 53,179 square miles with a population of about 2.9 million. The official language is English. Little Rock is the capital and the largest city. Arkansas was admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836. The Governor is Mike Beebe and the Lieutenant Governor is Bill Halter. The US Senators are Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, and the US House delegation has three democrats and one republicans. Economically, Arkansas relies on exporting agricultural and industrial goods for its revenue. The gross state product is about $87 billion and the per capita about $35,295. Arkansas has experienced an economic boom since the 1970s because gigantic corporations like Wal-Mart, J.B. Hunt, and Tyson Foods have their headquarters here. Exports are milk, hogs, rice, cotton, cattle, sorghum, soybeans, poultry and eggs. Arkansas is also an industrial processor of vanadium, bromine, paper products, machinery, fabricated metal products, electric equipment, and food products. Because of its warm climate, domestic tourism also plays a large share in the state economy.
