Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean is a European island nation. Iceland has had a long journey to freedom. It was the Free State of Iceland in 930 and it was unified with Norway in 1262. On January 14, 1814, it was ceded to Denmark. The Kingdom of Iceland entered a personal union with the Kingdom of Denmark on December 1, 1918, but this was followed by the fall of Denmark on April 9, 1940 and the personal union ended on June 17, 1944. In size, Iceland is 39,770 square miles. The population is estimated to be 319,386. The Gross Domestic Product is about $ 16.78 billion, with a per capita of $53,058. The global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 has hit Iceland hard and it has had an economic crisis because of the failure of the banking system, with the three largest banks, Glitnir, Landsbanki, and Kaupthing, having a combined debt that was six times the Gross Domestic Product.
