French Polynesia

French Polynesia, a French Overseas Collectivity in the Pacific Ocean, is a group of Polynesian Islands, including the most populous, Tahiti, which is in the Societal Island group. The capital and largest city, Papeete, is on Tahiti. In size, French Polynesia is 1,609 square miles and has a population of about 264,400, a calculation based on the 2007 census of 259,596. The Gross Domestic Product is about $5.65 billion, with a per capita of $21,999. Since the government is a dependent territory of France, the official language is French and the President is the head of France, President Nicholas Sarkozy. However, the President of French Polynesia is Gaston Tong Sang and the High Commissioner is Adolphe Colrat. The ethnic groups are Polyn矔sians; Europeans, mainly French; and East Asians, mainly Chinese. The French Polynesia economy is the fifth largest in Oceania, after the countries of Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and New Caledonia. Most of the income is from tourism, with some from imported goods. The agricultural industry has grown with the popularity of Noni as a recognized medicinal fruit. Other agricultural crops include: coconuts, fruits and vegetables, and vanilla. French Polynesia was formed as a Protectorate in 1842, became an overseas territory in 1946, and was recognized as an Overseas Collectivity in 2004.
